Sea Lions at the Harbor

Sea Lion are an important part of the South Beach Harbor environment. They may be in and around the harbor year-round and more active and visible May through August.
To deter sea lion from climbing the docks and vessels, the Harbor uses seal stops, buckets and air dancers. Berth holders may request a seal stop or buckets for their vessel from the Harbor office. A refundable deposit may be required. Berth holders are responsible for maintaining the deterrent.
To deter sea lions from staying on the docks, the Harbor suggests:
- Making noise. Loud noises may scare them away, such as air horns, whistles or clapping. Please be mindful of noise levels around your neighbors.
- Big movements. Sea lions are wary of bold movement, such as waving arms, flags, or placing other moving objects around the vessel or dock.
- Visual Deterrents. Adding fenders or safety fencing around the accessible ledges of the dock may discourage sea lions from climbing up.
