El Niño 2026-2027

What the Port is doing

The National Weather Service says a strong-to-very strong El Niño is likely through early 2027. The NWS outlook favors wetter-than-normal conditions in Northern California for December 2026 through February 2027. Prepare now for rain, flooding, strong winds and power outages.

The Port has activated an all-hands response to protect public safety and critical infrastructure. Efforts include preparing temporary flood barriers in high-risk areas, assessing vulnerable infrastructure, strengthening stormwater-pumping capabilities, and coordinating with City partners and tenants.

What Port tenants can do

While flooding impacts to facilities and transportation modes vary by location, Port tenants may experience disruptions during periods of exceptionally high tides and storm activity.

Protective steps include:

  • Identifying areas that may be vulnerable to flooding or standing water;
  • Protect building openings with sandbags or other flood protection;
  • Protect sensitive equipment and supplies that can’t be moved from floodwaters;
  • Secure outdoor equipment, materials, and furnishings; including crab pots
  • Move vehicles, and elevate equipment, and valuable items from low-lying areas;
  • Ensure employees and visitors know how to receive updates and respond to weather-related disruptions to transportation and workplace access.
  • Prepare vessels for high winds, and sea levels, and potential power outages.
