Project Schedule
Near-term enhancements complete: June 2025 - Summer 2026
Long-term resilience improvements: January 2026 - Fall 2030
Project Summary
Fisherman’s Wharf Forward is a major investment strategy aimed at reinvigorating the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf, among the City’s most visited neighborhoods. This multi-phase (near-term and long-term) project will create a new destination and reconnect visitors to the Inner Lagoon. It will also advance seismic and sea level rise protections to ensure the historic area remains a vibrant destination for decades to come.
Fisherman’s Wharf Forward will focus on the areas of Taylor and Jefferson streets and the Wharf’s Inner Lagoon. The near-term work includes:
- Planning and community engagement
- Creating a new public plaza on Taylor Street where Alioto’s Restaurant stands now
- Creating a new Inner Lagoon overlook along Al Scoma Way
- Adding new lighting in the Inner Lagoon to highlight and celebrate the fishing fleet and historic fishing vessels
- Creating new opportunities for events and experiences
Longer-term efforts will focus on place making, resilience infrastructure designed to adapt Taylor Street and the Inner Lagoon through 2100, including strengthening or replacing the seawall and wharves, new buildings, potential historic rehabilitation, improving facilities for the fishing fleet and fishing industry, developing and leasing retail spaces, and enhancements to the public realm. Public outreach and engagement will inform these longer-term efforts.
Next Steps Long Term Project:
The Long -term project will advance through a community planning process where the Port will seek feedback from community members and stakeholders through a series of public meetings, surveys, and other methods to get feedback on the long-term project described above. This outreach process will occur throughout 2026 with a goal of having a conceptual plan completed in fall 2026.
The Long -term Project will launch with a community meeting (info below). The first workshop will focus on: 1) a review of existing policies and goals for Fisherman’s Wharf based upon the recently adopted Waterfront Plan; 2) how the project aligns with the Port’s Strategic Plan; 3) a review of the project goals; 4) information that we heard from stakeholders during the near term planning process; 5) existing conditions of the site, opportunities and constraints; 6) the project schedule; and 7) details on how the community and stakeholders can provide input throughout the planning process.
