First Cruise Ship Environmental Award

Crystal Harmony Recognized for Efforts in Protecting Air and Water Quality

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. (September 29, 2005) - The Port of San Francisco presented its first-ever Cruise Ship Environmental Award to the Crystal Harmony at Pier 35. The award was developed this year by the Port's Cruise Terminal Environmental Advisory Committee (CTEAC) to acknowledge cruise ships for reducing air and water pollution while operating in San Francisco Bay.

The three categories evaluated for the award are air emission reduction, wastewater treatment, and recycling and disposal programs for solid waste.

"Crystal Cruises is much honored to receive such an award," said Captain Birger Vorland, master of the Crystal Harmony. "It is part of our corporate culture to have the highest environmental standards on board our ships, and we take these matters very seriously."

CTEAC was established in 2003 to advise the San Francisco Port Commission on cruise ship-related water and air quality issues. Among the committee members are regulatory agencies, environmental organizations, organized labor, community groups, and maritime industry representatives, including Tom Greene, Crystal Cruises Director of Safety, Environment & Training.

Another new program promoted by CTEAC and launched earlier this month, thanks to a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, is a low-sulfur fuel subsidy program for cruise ships calling in San Francisco.

"The Port congratulates Crystal Cruises on receiving the Cruise Ship Environmental Award and thanks them for their efforts in safeguarding the environment," said Peter Dailey, Port maritime director. "We are proud of the work that CTEAC has accomplished and appreciate the support of the cruise industry and our collaborative partners."

The Port of San Francisco is an enterprise agency of the City and County of San Francisco that oversees a broad range of maritime, commercial, and public-access facilities along the City's waterfront that are held in public trust for the people of California.
