Gateway Sites Planning

In an effort to promote economic development in the Southern Waterfront, the Port has identified three Gateway Sites. These sites described below offer opportunities for community amenities, and job creation in strategic locations that take advantage of new transportation improvements in the area including the Third Street light rail, Illinois Street Bridge, and planned Cargo Way improvements as well as existing and proposed open space improvements in the Southern Waterfront.

The locations of these sites are provided below as well as links to additional information on the sites.

Cargo Terminal Gateway: This site is positioned just west of the entry to Pier 96 Terminal and Heron’s Head Park.

Third & Cargo Way Gateway: This site is located at Third Street and Cargo Way, the gateway to Bayview Hunters Point, just south of the San Francisco Fire Department station on the south side of Islais Creek.

Islais Creek Gateway: This site is located on the north side of Islais Creek, bounded by Indiana, Marin, and Tennessee Streets.

In 2009, the Port Planning Division initiated the planning processing for the two Gateway Sites along Cargo Way to solicit input from area stakeholders, and to develop guidelines for development.
