San Francisco Museum and Historical Society Advisory Committee

The Board of Supervisors created the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society Advisory Committee through passage of Ordinance No. 92-02 on May 21, 2002.

The purposes and duties of the Advisory Committee are to publicly discuss and make recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and Fine Arts Museums Board regarding any or all of the following topics:

(1) The management of the City history collections of the San Francisco Museums and Historical Society, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the San Francisco Public Library and other City departments (the "Collection") including but not limited to, issues related to the inventory, housing, storage, exhibition, conservation and development of such Collection;

(2) The type of relationship between the City and the Society that would best serve to ensure the continuing existence, financial stability and success of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society;

(3) The identification of permanent exhibition venue(s) for the Society's Collection and funding for such venue(s);

(4) Sources of potential financial support for the Society;

(5) The potential creation of one or more full-time or part-time positions under the Fine Arts Museums' budget for the purpose of conducting a complete inventory/catalogue of the City and County of San Francisco's historical collections as well as those of the Society;

(6) The potential merger of the City's historical collections with the Society's Collection; and

(7) Strategies to promote citywide communication and partnership between various local organizations that hold historical/cultural resources.

The Advisory Committee consists of nine members. The initial meeting was held on Thursday, November 14, 2002.
