Alcatraz was a legendary federal penitentiary that housed infamous inmates such as Al Capone, and Robert "Birdman" Stroud from 1934 to 1963. While it is no longer a prison, Alcatraz is now home to rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife, and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds. Alcatraz Island is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and guests are invited to visit the island to learn the wealth of stories that lie within the Cellhouse walls and around the island. Alcatraz tours are offered daily by Alcatraz Cruises, located at Pier 33 on the Embarcadero. Reservations are strongly recommended.
